2010 Paul Lange Award Recipient
John Marks
Principal
Concordia Lutheran High School
Ft. Wayne IN
John grew up in Ohio. Although he entertained thoughts of entering the preaching ministry, he ultimately graduated from the school now known as Concordia University in Chicago with a degree in secondary education and since has received his Masters degree in Guidance and Counseling from Eastern Michigan University.
He has taught at Martin Luther High School in Maspeth, New York. He is one of Concordia LHS few Lutheran teachers to teach in a Catholic girls’ high school in Michigan – where he said he was also gaining skills in coaching football at another nearby Catholic high school. He spent time at Lutheran High School West in Detroit, first as a guidance counselor, than as assistant principal, coaching all the while. John was recommended to serve as Assistant Principal at Concordia Lutheran High School in Fort Wayne in 1983. In 1999, John Marks became the Principal of CLHS where he has continued to serve with commitment, a passion for the mission and ministry of the school, and Christian leadership for students and staff alike.
His degree in counseling strongly colors his approach to educational leadership. In situations of conflict, he is about reconciliation. He is an avid reader of professional literature, spends a great deal of time in classrooms and continuously works with staff, individually and collectively, for school improvement. Under a policy based governance model he understands the role of the principal in the school and continues to grow in all the responsibility and accountability that goes with that. John is seen and appreciated by students and staff alike as the spiritual leader of Concordia Lutheran High School.
John was extremely fortunate to have married Carol, herself a graduate of Concordia High School. Carol is a partner with John in the leadership role he plays at CLHS attending countless athletic contests, conferences, and other school and educational functions.
